2 Tips for Landing High-Paying SEO Writing Gigs

I posted this little ditty of an article on AssociatedContent today. . . it's part of staying on track with my article marketing, which I've been touting lately.

EXCERPT

SEO copywriting is a lucrative niche in freelance writing -- especially right now. But, many are entering on the low end of this profession, eg, $5 SEO article writing gigs. If you're a good SEO copywriter, you don't have to settle for this!

This is advice for SEO copywriters who are just starting out - and for more experienced ones who may be struggling to find high-paying SEO writing gigs. These two keys to landing high-paying clients should always be at the forefront when marketing for SEO writing jobs. Read the rest here.

How to Sell Clients on Your SEO Article Writing Services

Yesterday, I got a call from a potential client who was referred by an existing client. She's launching a brand new site and was completely in the dark about how much content she needed, how long it would take and how much it would cost.

I patiently walked her through what she needed, why, how long it would take and how much it would cost. She was relieved and impressed, saying something to the effect of "You really seem to know your stuff."

So my tip of the day for selling clients on your SEO article writing services is that you have to be a bit of an business consultant in this area. Many clients don't understand the whole "article marketing thing" and why it's one of the best ways to drive traffic to a new website -- relatively cheaply. What's in it for you, of course, is constant work.

All websites need fresh, unique content. Explaining the why behind this will convince most clients of the need for it readily. And, because you're the one who explained it and "knows their stuff," you'll most likely be the one they use when they're ready.

Whether I'll eventually get work from this prospect, I don't know. But, I do know that I left her with the lasting impression that I'm an SEO professional. And, most times -- that's enough to get the job.

Start a Lucrative SEO Writing Career -- Fast!

Don't forget, SEO is still pretty new and the vast majority of web users and website owners are clueless about it. This means more work for you -- the SEO professional. If you really want to start a lucrative SEO writing career get the ebook, How to Make $250+/Day Writing Simple, 500-Word Articles.

No Posts Next Week: I have some ebook writing I want to catch up on before the fall season rolls around and just need a bit of down time. I'll see you back here on Tuesday, August 12th, when I'll resume my usual Tues-Thurs posting schedule.

In the meantime, I hope you're squeezing every bit of fun out of summer!

Article Marketing No No's

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how I increased by ebook sales by 166% using article marketing. That seems to have fired quite a few of you up by the questions I'm receiving. Good for you!

Today over at BloggingTips, I wrote about some article marketing directory submission no no's. Article marketing is time consuming -- no doubt about it. But IMHO, the rewards greatly outweigh the drawbacks, especially if you stick with it. These tips will help you avoid some of the article marketing sins I still commit. That way, you can start reaping the benefits of it that much sooner.

Why PLR Content is the Money Making Black Sheep of the Web

PLR content is without a doubt the black sheep of the web. Is it fair? Is there a bit of discrimination going on here?

What is PLR Content? For those who may not know about this type of writing, PLR stands for private label rights content. It's sold to more than one party. But, you may be thinking, "Then it should be the black sheep. Why would anyone want to use content that can be found on other sites?"

As with most things in life, there's more than one side to this story. Guess who's making money from PLR content while discriminating against individual PLR content providers? Read the "hot topic" article Is PLR Content Dead? on InkwellEditorial.com.

The 8 Components of a Profitable, Popular Freelance Writing Blog

As I've been writing about this week, writing jobs kind of dry up during the summer. Today, I had one of the slowest days I've had since I started SEO writing. The summer started off with a bang -- and I thought it was going to continue that way -- but things have slowed down noticeably and I for one couldn't be happier about it.

Today, I actually finished and uploaded to e-Junkie the ebook entitled How to Start a Profitable, Popular Freelance Writing Blog that I've been putting off for about four months. It lists 8 components every freelance writing blog should have to be popular and profitable. I simply hadn't had time to polish up -- and I'd already written 90% of it. I've been that busy!

How to Generate Income During Your Down Time

Yesterday, I sent out about 75 emails to past contacts and woke up to 6 responses in my inbox this morning. I landed one project from that, which is to start next week -- with the possilbity of two more as well. Nothing's firm with these though, so I don't count them.

Freelance Writing Marketing Tip of the Day: Use your downtime wisely to catch up on projects you never seem to have time for -- and to keep on marketing. In fact, the first thing I did this morning was send out 10 more email queries.

Advice for Newbies & Nervies (Nervous Freelance Writers) During this Slow Season

I know a lot of you may be worried about this slow time. Don't be. If you continue to market, believe me, projects will seem to drop out of the sky come fall. You'll wonder what the heck is going on!

You see, what you are sending out now is being kept on file by many prospects. Proof? One of the inquiries I sent out to old contacts yesterday responded via the very first email I'd sent them last November.

See these summer marketing tips for freelance writers if you missed them earlier this week to figure out how to generate some income during the slow summer months - and right on into the busy fall season.

"When will the work start rolling in?" you may be wondering. After Labor Day, you should see a marked increase in projects. I fully expect to be slammed, because I'm marketing like crazy -- up to 50 queries a week, where I've only been sending out 5-15 b/c I've been so busy.

Traffic-Generating Lessons Learned from Internet Marketing Firms

As an SEO writer, I work with a lot of internet marketing firms. This has been a great learning experience for me on many levels about how to market on the web.

Why Internet Marketing Firms are Hired

To generate traffic -- this is the number one reason all internet marketing firms are hired. Serious web entrepreneurs realize that to get recognized on the web, you need to first get found on the web. SEO (search engine optimization) and SEM (search engine marketing) firms help their clients achieve these goals.

I've learned a ton about how they go about doing this, which I discuss in my post, Traffic Generating Tips I’ve Learned from Working with SEO Firms, over at BloggingTips.com today.

As I wrote, "Think about it this way: if the traffic generation experts (ie, Internet Marketing Firms) are using these methods to drive traffic to client sites, shouldn’t you be doing the same for your site?"

6 Ways to Increase Your Freelance Writing Income This Summer

Have you noticed that freelance writing projects are drying up now that it's summer? Are you perplexed at how hard it seems to be to bring in new clients now. The dog days of summer leave some freelance writers feeling like their wallets are being punished.

While everyone else is enjoying some fun in the sun, you may find yourself stressing about how you're going to handle the mortgage/rent payment next month. Even if things are not this dire for you (and I certainly hope they're not), here's a summer marketing tutorial for freelance writers, which is an extension of yesterday's blog post on why summer can be the best time to start a freelance writing career.

Taking the actions discussed can help you increase your freelance writing income during the slow summer months -- and beyond. I hope you find it helpful and if you do, don't forget to subscribe.

Why Summer Can Be the Best Time to Start a Freelance Writing Career

I usually don’t post on Mondays but just wanted to give you a preview of the more detailed post that’s to come tomorrow. I received an email from SEO Mary late last week that got me to thinking about yet another reason summer could be the best time to start a freelance writing career.

Gasp! A Freelance SEO Writer So Busy She’s Turning Down Work (Could this be you?)

SEO Mary wrote, in part:

Well, I'm way too busy to give you a true update. Suffice [it] to say I'm turning down work. Still not at the point to go full-time with the content writing, but I am turning down work because there's only so many hours in a day between life and the day job (I'm putting in 4 hours a night as it is. What WAS my daughter's name again...?;-). . .

I'm REALLY interested in the part about hiring other writers . . . I can see I'm really going to need that!” [In this part, she was referencing an ebook she purchased that, in part, went over how to go about hiring other freelancers to write for you.]
Freelance Writers: How to Use the Slow Summer Months to Get More Work

If your freelance writing business is having “growing pains” so to speak, then summertime is the best time to handle them. SEO Mary started her foray into SEO writing back in the spring (I think it was March).

As she said, she’s turning down work. This is only going to get more prolific come fall, because that’s when things pick up again. Freelance writing is a cyclical industry, so now is the time to handle any problems you may have, eg, new website design (which I’m going through now), hiring new writers, marketing for more work, etc.

While it may seem that your efforts are going largely unnoticed now, all of this behind-the scenes work will put you in great shape once the busy season rolls around – and this is only a few weeks away. So, use the downtime during the summer wisely.

Before you know it, freelance writing gigs will seem to fall out of the sky (if you target the right niche -- hint, hint SEO writing). Get set up to handle them now!

Freelance Writers: How to Create Passive Income for Retirement

Freelance writers: do you want to comfortaby retire one day?

I'm in my 40s, so I think a lot about retirement. And, although all of us have to think about it, as a freelance writer of course, I bear a lot more direct responsibility for making sure that my income is allocated correctly so that I can comfortably retire.

Some Sobering Retirement Stats

"The median balance in 401(k) plans and individual retirement accounts for workers in their 50s is just $60,000, which won't pay the bills for many years." [Source: Age 65 and Not Ready or Able to Go, WashingtonPost.com] When you consider that retirement income should last 20-30 years, how far do you think this will go? Scary!

By most estimates, you'll need between 60% and 80% of your final working years' income to maintain your lifestyle after retiring. . . . as you begin thinking about how much you'll need for a comfortable retirement, you may be startled to learn the impact of inflation. At an average inflation rate of 3%, your . . . annual income will need to increase each year even during retirement in order to keep up with the gradual rise in prices of everyday goods. [Source: How Much Do You Need to Retire?, Yahoo! Finance]

Fewer than half of American workers have estimated how much they’ll need to retire, according to the Employee Benefits Research Institute. The biggest risk retirees may face is running out of money while they’re alive. [Source: How Much Will You Need to Retire?, InvestorGuide.com]

Reading all of this got me to thinking about how freelance writers can make sure that they (i) first of all, can afford to retire; and (ii) start setting up passive income streams so that they won't have to worry if they haven't exactly saved a whole bunch during their working years.

Ideas on Creating Passive Income

To that end, here are some ideas on how freelance writers can create passive income for retirement. However you decide to save for your retirement just make sure that it's on your mind if you're a freelance writer.

Will You Be Able to Afford to Retire? How to Figure Out How Much You'll Need

If you're in your 20s and early 30s, setting aside nominal amounts of money and work towards creating self-produced streams of income now will make retirement something you look forward to, not something you dread.

Have a great weekend everybody . . . and hey, how about taking a little time over the next couple of days, sitting down with a retirement calculator and crunch some retirement numbers.

Increase Ebook Sales with an Article Marketing Blitz Campaign

How many articles do you think you have to write and submit to article directories to make one ebook sale a day? This was the question I posed in my post at BloggingTips.com last week entitled How to Stretch Your Articles into Dollars.

This week, I answered it in the post, How to Increase Ebook Sales with an Article Marketing Blitz. In this post, I also lay out how to create a step-by-step article marketing blitz campaign.

I've recently come back to article marketing as a way to drive traffic to my website and blog, a way to increase ebook sales and just as a general way of keeping my name front and center to my audience. Article marekting is a lot of work, especially if you write all of your own content - which I do and highly advise. I think it's the main reason though that it works so well for me (but, talk about paying your dues!).

Luckily, I take a long range view of it. My target date to be completely self-sufficient -- eg, earning a living from just my ebooks -- is January 2012. So I'm laying the groundwork now.

The #1 Reason Article Marketing Is So Effective

You see, the main reason article marketing works so well is that it drives traffic to your site for years to come. And, this is what I'm banking on. So while finding the time to write now is literally painful most days because I'm so busy with client work, I know I'll be glad in a few years that I stuck it out.

You can achieve article marketing success too! Read the article at BloggingTips.com today to get started.

How to Stretch Free Articles into Dollars

Yesterday over at BloggingTips.com, I wrote an article entitled How to Stretch Your Articles into Dollars. It's generated quite a few comments. I was surprised by this because article marketing has been "talked" to death on the net. It's not new, it's not exciting and it can be a lot of work. BUT, it just goes to show you, when you have concrete proof that something works, it will still get attention.

I think what really got everybody going was when I said how I'd increased my ebook sales by 166% by submitting an article a day to article directories -- for 30 days. No one joined me in my article marketing experiment, but the results speak for themselves. So, if you're on the lookout for a marketing strategy that works -- give this old internet marketing favorite a try.

Read the entire entry here. If it inspires you, you might want to check out the Inkwell Editorial Article Marketing Tutorial before getting started. If you like this post, don't forget to subscribe.

New York Times Exposure: Can you be the next freelance writer to be featured?

I wasn't supposed to post until Wednesday, but couldn't pass up this opportunity. I'll digress a bit to explain . . . Even though I’m southern by birth, I lived in what to me is the greatest city in the world for 18 years -- New York City. I bought a house in Atlanta four years ago, but still cling to my rent-stabilized apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, and go back to visit friends whenever I can.

So, what does this have to do with the title of this post? Well, I still read the New York Times online. And today as I was perusing the Habitats section (I get a kick out of the travails of apartment hunting in the city), I ran across this article.

It features freelance writer/author Mohammed Naseehu Ali, my ex-cube mate. We worked side-by-side at a legal publishing firm in the city in the early 90s, and became really good friends. I haven’t seen Mohammed for at least five years. We’ve exchanged a few emails over those years, but that’s about it.

Getting Featured for the First Time in the New York Times

Mohammed had his first book published in 2005, a full 12+ years after I first met him. It was written up in the Times. I remember reading with surprise the email he sent to everyone letting us know about the book. You see, there were a group of us who used to party and hang out, obsess over deadlines at work and discuss our dreams all those years ago. Through it all, Mohammed always wrote, ie, he took active steps toward his dream. Now, he's living it.

A somewhat reserved person, he was never a braggart. Most of us didn't even know he'd gotten a publishing contract, never mind the fact that he'd actually finished a book and gotten major press behind it. Seeing him featured for the second time in the Times reminded me -- yet again -- to continue to take active steps toward my life goals.

Make Your Dreams a Reality via a Vision Board

The other two things it reminded me to do was: (i) visualize my life as I want it to be (I talk about this indepth in Inkwell's freelance writing e-course); and (ii) keep plugging away at the steps to get there. If you do these two things, can you be the next freelance writer to be featured in the Times?

Maybe you can if you create a vision board. Do you know what a vision board is? It was discussed on Oprah recently, and I thought, "This is a must. I'm going to make one and frame it for my office wall."

I normally don't get too much into this new agey stuff, but some goals I've just been carrying around in my head and putting minimal effort behind have come true lately. So I thought, what if I really put some muscle behind it -- consciously and unconsciously.

Congratulations my friend. Good to see you again . . . and thanks for the timely reminders.

Sincerely,
Yuwanda Black, Publisher

Declare Your Independence w/ This Special Offer!

This is a whim offer. I hadn't planned to log on today, but as I usually do, I found myself drawn to at least checking email before getting ready for my barbeque (I have to make Sangria and burgers to take and am procrastinating before getting started).

At any rate, as I sit here surfing and playing I thought, what a perfect day to reward those who might be surfing the net on Independence Day -- which means one of three things probably;

i) You're surfing and goofing off (cool!);
ii) You logged on to pay bills or catch up on other paperwork (stop it, it's a holiday!); or
iii) You're so miserable in your job that you logged on to research ways to get out of it (eg, look for another job, or better yet, look for a money-making opportunity).

If you're in the last bunch, I want to help you declare your Independence. The following is for you:

SPECIAL EBOOK OFFER: Get 7 Ebooks Free! Want to learn how to make at least $250/day writing simple 500-word articles? Order the SEO Writing Ebook and get 7 more free: those found at http://www.freelancewritingwebsite.com/. Read success stories, case studies and testimonials here. Offer expires on Monday, July 7th at 9am EST (when I'm back in the office).

Important Notice: When you order the SEO writing ebook, it will be delivered immediately as a pdf download. When I get back into the office on Monday morning, I'll email you the free ebooks. All orders placed between Friday July 4th and Monday July 7th (until 9am EST) are eligible for this promotion.

Now get off line and go enjoy the day!

Sincerely,
Yuwanda

Get Your Blog Exposed to 40,000 Eyeballs!

Yesterday morning, I woke up to a nice surprise. Sitting in my inbox was a comment from a reader of my post on Copyblogger.com. For those who might be unfamiliar with this site, it is one of the leading sites on the web for freelance writers and copywriters. How prestigious? The RSS feed has close to 40,000 subscribers!

Remember a couple of months back when I wrote about guest blogging? In the post entitled, Why Darren Rowse, John Chow and Brian Clark Scare Me: How Guest Blogging Helped Me to Overcome Fear, I wrote, "Even though they weren’t advertising for guest posters, I submitted posts to CopyBlogger and Problogger. To date, I haven’t heard anything. FYI, site owners won’t respond with a yes or no; they’ll just publish the piece if they decide to use it."

Well, that's exactly what happened. I sent the guest post I impetuously wrote to Mr. Clark, the brain behind Copyblogger, around the first week of May. Yesterday, he published it. I wrote him a thank you and he responded that he'd meant to notify me that it was going to be published, but he was traveling and forgot.

And, the post is still live on the front page. A full 36 hours front and center on a site like this . . . and all it cost me was time. Viva la guest posting! Get on it you all. And, fyi, if you really want to know how to improve your copywriting, this site is a must. Subscribe. Read the post, 3 Things to Consider When Deciding How Long Your Blog Posts Should Be, here on the site.

Two Ways to Generate Short-term and Long-Term Traffic

This is the third part of the How to Write Content that Generates Traffic series. In this part, I’ll relay two techniques I use to generate interest and drive traffic to my site, no matter what I’m writing about. One method generates short-term traffic; the other long-term traffic. Read the entire post here.

It's almost Indepedence Day. I'm so psyched for a long weekend. I love the dog days of summer!
